In today's Britain, public demonstration has ceased to be a basic freedom. Instead, it has become a privilege that those in power grant or deny as they see fit. This represents the implication of new regulations that the current government is advancing, which would dictate the timing and location protests can take place, with possible imprisonment for those who disobey these limitations.

Gradual Weakening of Democratic Rights

Previous administrations had already undermined this fundamental freedom: the former Conservative government had granted law enforcement sweeping additional powers, which international human rights organizations had censured as "serious and undue limitations" on civil liberties. Collectively, these progressive assaults on liberty have effectively abolished the historically earned right to freedom of protest.

Exploiting Tragedy to Justify Crackdown

The latest limitations are being justified by referring to last week's heinous anti-Jewish attack on a Manchester Islamic center. We can all agree on universal agreement that the safety of British Jews must be safeguarded. However, employing this horrific incident as a justification to suppress opposition is not only disconnected to that responsibility but distorts it.

"When you cannot set boundaries at mass killing, you probably can't establish limits at democracy," observed a prominent American author, whose words that rings true for the present administration.

Historical Perspective of Protest

Consider Britain's rich history of public demonstration and direct action against racial discrimination and fascism, from the 1936 Battle of Cable Street to after World War II Jewish groups opposing fascism and the 1970s mobilizations against the National Front. Many of these early protesters were labeled as extremists in their time, even while they were fighting for the rights of marginalized groups.

Present Situation

In the current complicated landscape, here's what's truly occurring: The Israeli government – a sovereign nation – is committing what United Nations investigations have described as systematic destruction. Its warfare have prompted the global justice body to issue legal indictments against Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister.

Western popular sentiment has changed significantly against Israel's military campaign. In Britain, a substantial majority of citizens think Israel has probably committed international law violations. Most people would support a total prohibition on weapons exports to the nation, and back the detention of Netanyahu.

Suppressing Opposition

Having largely failed the public debate, pro-Israel advocates are now exploiting a despicable anti-Jewish attack to attempt to suppress a popular campaign against a moral catastrophe. The British government appears to be involved in this attempt. Government officials have failed to implement comprehensive sanctions on Israel and have allowed weapon shipments to continue.

People who are demonstrating against the erasure of Gaza have been characterized as dangerous radicals. Yet there's a important factor why there hasn't been a more extensive crackdown on these protesters until now: extremely few protesters have made genuinely hateful statements about Jewish people, giving law enforcement minimal reason to take action.

Dangerous Conflation

Merging Jewish heritage with the policies of the Israeli state is not only manipulative but also harmful. The official definition of antisemitism, accepted by the British government and many organizations, has been rightly questioned for potentially stifling valid commentary of Israel. However, there should be universal agreement about one of its central illustrations: that "holding Jewish people generally accountable for actions of the state of Israel" constitutes antisemitism.

Increasing Limitations

This is why we've reached a point where law enforcement can propose that demonstrations opposing Israel's policies should be called off because they might "accidentally or intentionally" support antisemitism. Similarly, political figures have declared that acknowledgment of Palestinian statehood has made organizations "complicit" in supposed mistreatment experienced by Jewish communities.

Inconsistent Treatment

On the very day as the religious center assault, the Israeli military killed numerous of Palestinian civilians in Gaza – adding to the horrific toll from 24 months of daily atrocities that have claimed tens of thousands of human lives. British political leaders and media outlets have hardly hidden the limited value they assign to Palestinian existence. This represents one of the most brazen expressions of racism in our time.

Crossing Thresholds

Our government has already crossed a dangerous boundary by banning Palestine Action, a peaceful, anti-genocide activist collective. Thousands of British demonstrators have been arrested, mostly for holding signs against genocide and endorsing the proscribed group. Many of those detained are elderly citizens; including a retired priest and the daughter of a World War II genocide survivor.

International Parallels

It's not difficult to see where this path leads. In the United States, political leaders helped demonize demonstrations supporting Palestine: a ex-political leader implied that some were "linked with" foreign governments, while the current president characterized such demonstrations as anti-Jewish. In doing so, they contributed to normalizing the authoritarian crackdown on such protests – and on freedom of expression in general.

Future Concerns

If a hard-right government comes to power, it would be granted extensive authority to suppress opposition. What might a new administration do with this repressive toolkit? Our forebears struggled, endured hardship and sacrificed their lives to establish our liberties. We may ultimately regret how easily we allowed them to be eroded.
