The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a six-month break that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
