Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
