Lifetime of Salary Not Enough for UK Workers to Join Wealthiest 10%, Analysis Says

Based on fresh analysis, the median worker in the UK would require half a century of salary to attain the financial standing of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Widening Financial Divide Over Time

This research reviewed financial assets statistics including the recent health crisis years and found that in 2006-08, it would have required 38 years' worth of median full-time earnings to join the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

A research lead part of the report stated: "Wealth gaps in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary during their working years would still not be able to attain the highest level of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The study discovered that the difference between the net worth of the average person and a person belonging to the richest segment was £1m in the pre-crisis period, but had expanded to £1.3m in real terms by 2020-22.

The economist added: "These differences are especially alarming as financial progression in Britain is low – those who commence life well-off tend to continue being rich, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Despite the wealth gap expanding in absolute terms, the percentage of overall assets in the UK owned by the most affluent homes – known as "comparative financial divide" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s era," according to the study.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK rose substantially from triple the yearly economic output, to nearly seven and a half times.

Factors of Financial Divide

So-called "automatic" increases, by means of increasing property values and variations in pension valuations, were the key contributors of the widening wealth gap from 2010 onward, according to the analysis.

These appreciations tended to accrue to elderly homeowners, the analysis reveals – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The typical financial disparity between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in pre-financial crisis, to £310,000.

Area-Based Disparities

There were also pronounced geographic differences, with the typical amount of net worth in recent years standing at £290,000 in south-east England, where property prices have typically increased quickly, versus £110k in the NE of England.

Health Crisis Years Effects

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and pandemic lockdowns limited opportunities for spending, the statistics indicate numerous families were able to save, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, nevertheless. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their available funds grow by only eighty pounds over the pandemic period (2019-20 to 2021-22), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. On the other hand, the median home in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the study reveals.
