Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities shared security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
