Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a second term in office. “If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.” The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House. The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year. A New Life Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement. “The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message. “It captures the spirit of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.” Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
